Climate Chief Lord Stern "Go Veggie to save the planet"

Next time I'm at a dinner party feeling bad for being the 'difficult vegetarian', or when I'm having to defend myself against comments that I'm not observing the 'circle of life'...or even the next time I'm being chased around the room by a friend with a slice of ham, I shall remember this fact...

That meat production is responsible for about 18% of global carbon emissions.

That is a serious amount. Methane (emitted by livestock with each bottom burp) is 23 times more powerful than carbon dioxide as a global warming gas.

Lord Stern said that a successful deal at the Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen in December would lead to soaring costs for meat and other foods that generate large quantities of greenhouse gases. He hopes that over time, as people begin to feel more responsible towards climate change issues, we will soon regard the consumption of meat in large quantities as unacceptable.

I really hope so. Not only will it help reduce methane emissions, with reduced demand the conditions for livestock should improve (which will make Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall very happy). And since most people eat way too much meat as it is, our general health should improve too. It'll also reduce the destruction of forest land for cattle ranching and the production of animal feeds such as soy. Yippee!

However, considering how frequently I am verbally abused, chased by ham + served the vegetarian staple of Mushroom Risotto, I cannot see this happening overnight.

This thought-provoking?! image was borrowed from queenofheartss @ deviantart.com - thanks!

10 reasons to buy local

Yesterday I went to my local East Dulwich green grocer and bought about 8 mushrooms, 4 tomatoes, a whole load of green beans, a pepper and 5 onions for £2.50! Bargainous. And that's not even the best bit - even though they were meant to have shut they let me in anyway, they then proceeded to make polite conversation with me (!) and they even smiled!! A very different experience to the one I'd have received had I gone to Somerfield.

Then today I came across this at PSFK + thought I'd share because I believe strongly that shopping locally is the thing to do + this gives a brilliant list of why we should all do it.

Local First, a Grand Rapids Michigan-based organization that encourages sustainable, locally-based economies has made a simple but effective illustration of how money flows if it’s spent at a locally owned business versus a non-local business. They also explain their top ten reasons to shop local first:

1. Significantly More Money Re-circulates

When you purchase at locally owned businesses rather than nationally owned, more money is kept in the community because locally-owned businesses often purchase from other local businesses, service providers and farms.

2. Non Profits Receive Greater Support

Local business owners donate more to local charities than non-local owners.

3. Unique Businesses Create Character & Prosperity

The unique character of Grand Rapids is what brought us here and keeps us here. Our tourism businesses also benefit.

4. Environmental Impact Is Reduced

Local businesses make more local purchases requiring less transportation and usually set up shop in town centers rather than on the fringe. This generally means contributing less to sprawl, congestion, habitat loss and pollution.

5. Most New Jobs Are Provided By Local Businesses

Small local businesses are the largest employers nationally.

6. Customer Service Is Better

Local businesses often hire people with more specific product expertise for better customer service.

7. Local Business Owners Invest In Community

Local businesses are owned by people who live in this community, are less likely to leave, and are more invested in the community’s future.

8. Public Benefits Far Outweigh Public Costs

Local businesses require comparatively little infrastructure and more efficiently utilize public services relative to chain stores.

9. Competition And Diversity Leads To More Consumer Choices

A marketplace of thousands of small businesses is the best way to ensure innovation and low prices over the long-term.

10. Investment In Greater Grand Rapids Is Encouraged

A growing body of economic research shows that in an increasingly homogenized world, entrepreneurs and skilled workers are more likely to invest and settle in communities that preserve their one-of-a-kind businesses and distinctive character.

The Reverend goes all green

Reverend + The Makers Guitarist, Tom Jarvis performed their last song on the John Peel tent at Glastonbury using a guitar made from recycled materials.

Endangered hardwood is often used to make guitars, but these bad boys, found at the Ethical Superstore are made from a variety of different recycled materials. You can choose from the ‘Espresso’ – made from vending machine coffee cups, the ‘Chilli’ – made from off-cuts from industrial pipes, the ‘Pirate’ – sparkling fragments of crushed CDs suspended in translucent blue from office water cooler bottles. There are loads of others to choose from too.

ONE FOR SUZ
Have you seen The Flight of the Conchords? Well if me + my blog is like Bret + Jermaine, then you're Mel:

TELECOMS
Nokia has launched the next stage of its Music Almighty campaign - a
roller disco tour of the UK visiting London, Manchester + Brum. You can sign up for a pair of tickets here to skate for an hour + be musically entertained by DJ sets from Norman Jay, Zero 7, Guilty Pleasures + more. The tour supports Nokia’s ‘Comes with music’ service which has been set up to take on iTunes + has been doing very well having signed up all the major labels bar 1 (EMI). And they’ve cleverly turned what would otherwise be a purely experiential activity into a traffic + sales-driver for their music store by offering everyone to sign up a free download.

Blackberry
will be pleased. As demonstrated in its latest campaign, Blackberry is trying to position itself as more of a consumer device.
And now it turns out it’s benefiting from iPhone hype as consumers look for a more affordable option. The Samsung Soul does pretty well too..

Sony Ericsson
has linked with the Women’s Tennis Association + to support it is launching an ad campaign across 75 countries worth £75m. They’ve also linked with Maria Sharapova to launch a range of mobile phone accessories for women in the 3rd quarter of this year called the
Design Collection. Consisting of phone cases, party bags and travel wallets made with Sharapova’s ‘style, fashion + glamour’.

Worth reading but very long.
This report talks about the predicted growth in global entertainment + media driven by digital + mobile. Now, we've been talking about this for 8 months or so, but suddenly the whole world is talking about mobile advertising as the next big thing. Nokia has even created Ad Labs in London + Boston to educate + certify ad agency staff on the dark art of mobile advertising + the huge potential for their clients’ brands.

Disney
has linked up with Sharp to launch a
Cinderella themed handset aimed at tweens.

Watch this space - thanks to the Nintendo Wii making gaming more accessible, men + women of all ages now consider themselves to be 'casual gamers'. Nokia’s UK Marketing Director, Will Harris reckons gaming will be bigger than music as an industry this year + have made it a top priority. After the modest success of the Nokia NGage, its gaming software now sits alongside it's music + mapping software. Sony Ericsson have launched a Wii-style motion-gaming enabled handset, the F305.

INTERNET + SOCIAL MEDIA

Jim came across this one – Skittle Yourself is a simple but clever microsite that allows kids to create their own characters, Skittles packets + more + then export them into their Bebo profiles + other social networks. A nice example of creating online groundswell - Spore is an EA Games endeavour, which is not to be officially released until September, when it will be released on platforms including the iPhone. But such is the pedigree of its creator the buzz starts now. Created by the guy behind The Sims and Sim City in this new game you get to play God starting at the beginning of evolution and extending all the way to dominating outer space. To build a community online + get people talking + interacting, EA has created a site where you can create + download your own Spore creature + keep up-to-date on Spore news. Some of us were talking yesterday about the likelihood of an application that tells you where in the world your friends are popping up soon. And then literally 30 mins later EI sent through a link to Loopt - a social compass that does just that.

YOOF...+ A BIT OF TELECOMS

Everyone’s been talking about social media, buzz marketing, branded content blah blah blah as the favoured methods of creating a deeper interaction + 2-way conversations between brands + consumers. No longer do consumers just react to what a brand is telling them..they now have control + influence like never before. And while some brands have (to some extent) enabled their customers to even influence the design of products for a while now, I have a feeling this will become even more common - especially among the youth audience to whom expressing individuality is absolutely essential. Nike has been doing the customisation thing for a while, but has now stepped it up a notch by tapping into the mobile world. With Nike PhotoID, consumers can MMS a picture from the real world to inspire their footwear design. Nike will take the 2 main colours from the image to create a personalised pair of trainers. The user is then sent a link to view the trainers on the Nike PhotoID mobile site where they can use the image as wallpaper, send it to a friend + buy the trainers. They’ve timed it pretty well because as people are getting more + more dependant on the internet, social networks, email etc, they’re less averse to paying the connection charges to access the internet on their mobiles (the main barrier before). However, my thinking is that while the youth audience should demonstrate the biggest opportunity for this kind of campaign, they also have the least disposable income..to pay the connection charges + for the trainers themselves?!

..however, Blyk might just solve this problem. Blyk is an advertiser-funded free mobile phone service for 16-24 year olds. In exchange for agreeing to receive up to 6 commercial messages a day (MMS + SMS), users are given 43 minutes of talk + 217 texts free each month. Potentially freeing up cash for mobile internet (?), hmm. Blyk rents space on Orange’s network + has been around for 7 months now – they’ve reached 100k users ahead of schedule and hope to reach 250k users by Christmas.

And just to support the above…
here’s another interesting presentation from Mobile Youth discussing what’s next in media for youth. And here are some great stats + graphs + things on the whole customisation thing.

ONE FOR TOM

Puma has created i-cycle – a site that explores + celebrates the culture of cycling through a series of films following cyclists in New York. While I do think the films go some way to capture what’s great about cycling, they’re just slightly too long + not quite engaging enough. However, I do think Puma is onto something + could do more with this…what with the whole green thing + because cycling IS fun, liberating, adventurous + should be shared. In fact I think they’d do well to get me + Tom involved.

GREEN + ETHICAL
Really liking
Tonic – they make lovely ethical + organic clothes + bags..altho they are lacking in the female department at the moment. I do think it would be a crime if a certain Art Director of ours lived much longer without this. Camping, learning + entertainment – amazing. The Howies ‘Do’ lectures are taking place in September + they’re looking for applicants with causes they’re passionate about to learn how to actively make a difference. I’m pretty sure you have to write a handwritten letter to apply - find out more here. This is great - Time Out's A-Z of Green.

JUST PLAIN WEIRD
I think Alex + co. should wear these interesting
Xbox trousers to their next client meeting…(g)eeeek! Weird – Open Please is a website selling ‘distinctive gifts for the dentist profession’ (WHAT?) – tho I have to say I do quite like the Dentist watch. This reminds me of the Family Guy episode where Peter wishes for his own personal soundtrack – this t-shirt plays different soundtracks selected by you based on your mood, including ‘sexy time’ and ‘sad accident’ themes. I’d love it for maybe 10 minutes.

TALKS / COURSES

Online Marketing Show 24th + 25th June – this is FREE guys, some of us should definitely go. Including a variety of talks including: Creative Directors showcase, Marketing through Social Networks, Widgets / Web Apps.

TELECOMMS
Orange to launch innovative virtual balloon race. Nice new Sony Ericsson G700. The negative impact of the iPhone on other carriers and makers.

SOCIAL MEDIA
Social networking site Bebo has commissioned a 2nd series of online TV show Sofia's Diary starring the 17-year old Sofia and her friends at college and work. Sofia’s Diary which was sponsored by Unilever’s Sure Girl deodorant first time round was also broadcast on digital TV station Fiver where it attracts 250k viewers. Channel 4 has turned to Facebook and Bebo to trigger interest in Big Brother 9 with a Facebook fan page and application which users can use to watch and rate the show + get news as it breaks.
Research by Thinkbox and the IAB shows that using TV and online together in ad campaigns can result in 47% more positivity about a brand. The research also shows that the likelihood of buying or using a product increases by more than 50% when the two channels are used together…really interesting article debating in-house vs. out-sourcing when it comes to the production of engaging digital content at a time when agencies such as AKQA are setting up film departments in-house. From Nada - a clever campaign from Penguin that tells stories through Google Maps + Twitter...oooh.

GREEN STUFF
Innocent is running its ‘buy one get one tree’ campaign again which plants a tree for every bottle of Innocent bought. The site also includes digital badges, Facebook widgets and information on UK forest walks. Here's what Contagious has to say about it.
Discovery Channel have launched a Planet Green channel. At a time of real concern for the number of plastic bottles hitting landfill (which take 150 years to decompose!), research shows that the UK is the fastest growing bottled-water market. To attempt to reverse this trend, the Evening Standard launched the Water on tap campaign alongside Mayor Ken (Boris continues to support it) encouraging London restaurants to pledge to offer tap water as standard to make drinking tap water more socially acceptable.

WII-NOVATION
You can now use your Wii remote to create street art with Wii-graffiti.
Quit smoking with Alan Carr, Ubisoft and DS:

JUST COOL / CLEVER STUFF
Customise your moleskin.
Clever advertising for Alzheimers charity in South Africa. Clever and simple. A site where you can find movie title screens – might come in useful one day?!

THE WORLD WIDE WEB
Apple launches films on iTunes.
A really impactful video and website for charity, the girl effect which aims to empower females in poverty-striken countries. Coldplay preview new album on MySpace. To support new release Adulthood – the sequel to last year’s Kidulthood, Pathe has created a Facebook fan page offering ‘fans’ the chance to win screening tickets and access exclusive content such as trailers and film stills. This is genius – NZ campaign to encourage reading (and slacking at work) with book scripts presented in powerpoint. The Green Room + E.I have launched a new microsite for Christian Aid called ctrl.alt.shift. Ctrl.alt.shift differentiates Christian Aid from other charities by not just asking for money but by empowering people to make a difference with matters they’re really passionate about - giving them a voice and a platform to express it in a way that reaches + inspires others. The community-based site asks its users to create content that helps raise awareness of the various issues that Christian Aid supports, with the best being posted to the site. The initiative is being supported by top music names, Estelle and Sway.

YOOF
The Ruby Pseudo blog has these great timelines to show what’s pertinent + personal to kids’ aged between 11-16, broken down by year: 11-12's / 12-13's / 14-15's / 15-16's

Interesting Mobile youth Marketing to Generation Y presentation. And even better than that, MTV Asia has written this great pres on youth behaviour – full of great stats and insights.

CAKES
F*^k off-off. I noticed on W+K’s blog that they’ve had bake-offs and Jack-offs, and last week they held a
Muff-off. And sources tell me that Iris often hold bake-offs – and while I know we’re planning a bank holiday Jerk-off, I can’t help thinking we need to avoid the whole ‘off-ing’ thing. So wrack your brains for thoughts on how we can each demonstrate our creative talents in a fun way that brings us all together. Alternatively we could take the bake-off thing to a new level of wholesome’ness and do it for Breast Cancer Care who’s asking people to hold strawberry picnics this June.

EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
Looks cool - Clive Boursnell exhibition on historic london. And another exhibition about the last few months of the Routemaster in London. IT'S MY BIRTHDAY next week - so I'm going here on Friday if anyone would like to join me for a night of pass the parcel, limbo + burlesque...no, really!

JUST WEIRD
Jeeeezus.

One for Lucy – social media (baby book) for babies.

UK is fastest growing bottled-water market

British consumers have been drinking bottled water at a faster rate than any other European country over the past five years, according to a report by independent market analyst Datamonitor. However, the UK lags behind Italy, France and Spain in terms of overall volume.

On average, British people drank 41 litres per person in 2007, which represents a compound annual growth rate of 8% between 2002 and 2007 - the fastest in Europe. Datamonitor predicts this will rise to 57.8 litres by 2012.

Per capita consumption is highest in countries where the drinking of bottled water is more established, such as Italy, at 234 litres per person per year, France (142.5 litres) and Spain (143.2 litres).

The increase comes despite environmental concerns associated with bottled water, and high-profile campaigns such as The Evening Standard's Water on Tap scheme to make tap water freely available in London restaurants and bars.

Datamonitor consumer markets analyst Nick Beevors says bottled water is chosen in favour of soft drinks, rather than tap water. He says: "It is growing in popularity as people choose it over other soft drinks because it does not contain calories, caffeine, or artificial colours."

Taken from somewhere, but I can't remember where

And here are loads of insightful on-the-street interviews investigating how youth feels about mobile brands + other youth brands. Here’s a nice account of the recent Mobile Youth Marketing Workout. Almost ¾ of 11-25 year olds want to know the news, with 51% saying it’s important and 23% saying it was very important. Meanwhile 25% of female respondents said news was not very important.
